How WhatsApp Business API pricing works
Meta charges per conversation, not per message. A conversation is a 24-hour session that starts when your template message is delivered, and the rate depends on two things: the customer's country and the template category.
- Marketing — promotions, offers, product announcements. The highest rate.
- Utility — order confirmations, delivery updates, payment reminders. Much cheaper.
- Authentication — one-time passcodes for login or verification.
- Service — replies within 24 hours of a customer messaging you first. Free on the Cloud API.
Two practical takeaways: classify templates as utility wherever they genuinely are (it's often 5–10× cheaper than marketing), and answer customer-initiated chats within the 24-hour window — those conversations cost nothing. Note that these Meta charges are separate from your messaging platform subscription: Meta bills your WhatsApp Business account directly, and Tenreply charges no markup on conversation rates.
