Tech Provider vs Solution Partner vs BSP: Which One Do You Need?

Meta Tech Provider, Solution Partner, BSP and Business Partner explained in plain English, and why most businesses need none of them to use the WhatsApp API.

Quick Answer

A business does not need to be a Solution Partner or a Tech Provider to use the WhatsApp Business API. Those are programme statuses for companies that build or resell messaging software. As a business, you only need your own business portfolio and WhatsApp Business Account, and you connect them to a platform. The terms matter because they decide who owns the account, who is billed, and who is accountable when something breaks.

Last checked October 2026. Meta renames menus and changes review rules often, so treat the steps as the path, and confirm the exact wording on screen against Meta's documentation.

The Terms, Side by Side

TermWhat it meansWho it applies to
Business (you)Owns a business portfolio and a WhatsApp Business Account (WABA).The company that wants to message customers.
BSP (Business Solution Provider)The older, widely used name for a company that provides API access, an inbox and support.Software vendors, in everyday usage.
Tech ProviderA Meta programme tier for companies whose software connects client businesses through Embedded Signup. The client businesses own their own accounts and generally pay Meta directly.Software platforms.
Solution PartnerA higher Meta partner tier with additional commercial capabilities, such as sharing a credit line so a client's Meta charges can be billed through the partner.Larger providers and resellers.
Meta Business PartnerThe umbrella label for companies in Meta's partner programmes.Any of the above, once accepted.

Meta renames and restructures these tiers from time to time, so check Meta's current partner documentation before relying on a label in a contract.

Why You Should Care Which Model Your Provider Uses

  • Account ownership. In the Embedded Signup model, the WABA sits in your business portfolio. If you leave, the number and templates stay yours. Ask any provider this question directly.
  • Billing. Meta's per-message charges are separate from the platform fee. Depending on the model, you pay Meta directly or through the provider. Either way, check for markup: compare with the pricing calculator.
  • Portability. A clean exit path is described in our provider migration guide.
  • Support. Partner status can speed escalations, but it does not guarantee approvals. No provider can force Meta to approve a template, a verification or a display name.

Do I Need My Own Meta Developer App?

Only if you are building your own integration directly against the Cloud API. If you use a platform that handles Embedded Signup, the platform's Meta app does the connecting on your behalf, and you grant it access to your WABA through the Meta popup. You can see and revoke that access from your business settings.

Questions to Ask Any Provider

  1. Will the WhatsApp Business Account be in my business portfolio?
  2. Who is billed for Meta's message charges, and is there markup?
  3. Can I export my contacts, conversations and templates?
  4. What happens to my number if I cancel?
  5. Do you use the official Cloud API, with no WhatsApp Web scraping? (See why unofficial tools put numbers at risk.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Tech Provider the same as a Solution Partner?

No. They are different tiers of Meta's partner programme. A Tech Provider connects clients through Embedded Signup; a Solution Partner has additional commercial capabilities such as billing arrangements.

Is a BSP the same as a Solution Partner?

"BSP" is the older generic term. Today's Meta programme names are Tech Provider and Solution Partner, though many vendors still say BSP.

Can I become a Solution Partner myself?

Only if you plan to provide messaging services to other businesses and meet Meta's programme requirements. A business messaging its own customers does not need it.

Who owns my WhatsApp number when I use a platform?

With Embedded Signup, the number registers on your own WhatsApp Business Account in your own portfolio. Confirm this with the provider before you sign.

Own Your Account, Use Our Platform

Tenreply connects through Meta's official Embedded Signup, so the WhatsApp Business Account is yours. Get started and see the inbox, broadcasts and automation on your own number.
